flat topped, upside down cone, clear lights with different sized circles that expanded and contracted
I was a passenger on the Ponant Le Laperouse cruise ship traveling with my family from Hong Kong to Taiwan. My room was at the very back of the ship. After dinner I was sitting on the deck listening to an audio book. Sky was clear. Stars were evident. Some haze at water level. It was dark. Very little light.
At about 10 pm I noticed a circular set of clear lights rotating counter clockwise slightly above the haze and seemingly close to the ship. My first thought was it was a drone. I kept watching for about 15 minutes. Periodically, It would rapidly move vertically--up and down. I went inside our room and got my husband who agreed it was something odd. I then used a set of binoculars, and easily found the the flat topped upside down cone shaped thing. It had circles on the side that expanded and contracted, all in clear lights. Circles were of different sizes and looked liked watching a cell under a microscope. Moving, contracting and expanding circles. I watched this for nearly 30 minutes.
I have no explanation why I didn't notify the bridge or take a photo. I did think, that I would ask the ship the next day and I assumed they would have seen it from the bridge--- as it was very clearly there. I assumed they had cameras that would record it. I did not attempt to take a photo. Regrettably I do not know why. I was actually rather mesmerized by this object. After about 45 minutes, it disappeared.
The following morning I asked the ship's captain if they had seen it. He seemed to know nothing about it, but did seem interested in my account. He said the ship's drone was not flying and they did not have cameras that film off the back of the ship. The bridge faces forward which explains why they did not see behind the ship.
I have looked around online to see if I can see a drawing or photo of what I saw, but have seen nothing like it. So thought I would simply report it.
