WHAT IS THIS?
The Marine Nav Tracker is a full sailboat navigation station running in your browser — free, open, and fully functional without any hardware. It provides real-time nautical charts, instrument displays, AIS vessel tracking, autopilot control, anchor alarm, course plotting, and UAP sighting reports.
CHART LAYERS
Select your chart base from the header buttons. OUTDOORS (Stadia) is the default — good coastal detail. OCEAN (MapTiler) gives bathymetric depth contours. OpenSeaMap seamark overlay loads on top of any base — buoys, wrecks, lights, port markings.
INSTRUMENT DISPLAYS
Click any of the 8 buttons on the left to open a full instrument screen above the chart:
- 🧭 NAV — Speed, course, heading, VMG, heel, barometer, water temp
- 🌬 WIND — True & apparent wind, wind rose, 10-min shift graph, Beaufort scale, autopilot wind lock
- ⚙ HELM — Autopilot modes (STBY/AUTO/WIND/TRACK), course buttons ±1°/±10°, rudder angle, XTE
- 📡 DEPTH — Depth in feet/metres/fathoms, water temp, heel, barometer
- ⚓ AIS — All vessels in range: bearing, range, CPA, speed, destination
- 📍 ROUTE — Active waypoints, distances, ETA, GPX export
- ⚓ ANCHOR — Set anchor alarm with drag radius, position, drag distance
- 📟 STATUS — Full system status: Signal K, AIS, chart, position
SIMULATION MODE
Press ▶ SIM in the header (or RUN SIM on any display screen) to launch the full voyage simulation. SV ALIEN ALERTS departs her slip on Harbor Island, San Diego, motors through the bay channel following real waypoints, raises sail at Ballast Point, clears Point Loma, and sails 100nm offshore — where the 2004 USS Nimitz Tic-Tac UAP encounter is recreated. The UAP report modal pre-fills automatically with the full nav context.
CONNECTING LIVE INSTRUMENTS
For live instrument data from your boat, install Signal K Server (free, signalk.org) on your laptop or Raspberry Pi. Connect your boat's NMEA 2000 or NMEA 0183 instruments to Signal K, then enter the Signal K host address in the admin settings. All instruments, AIS targets from your VHF radio, and autopilot control become live.
Recommended hardware: Vesper Marine Cortex M1 — combines VHF radio, Class B AIS transponder, and WiFi gateway in one unit. Connect it to your NMEA 2000 backbone and Signal K reads everything wirelessly.
AIS VESSEL TRACKING
With a paid AIS API key configured (Data Docked, Datalastic, VesselFinder, or AISHub), vessels populate on the chart for any visitor regardless of location. Without an API key, the chart shows your local AIS targets from your onboard VHF radio via Signal K.
UAP REPORTING
Press 🛸 UAP to file a sighting report. The form auto-captures your complete nav state at the moment of the event — position, heading, speed, wind, depth, barometric pressure, nearby vessels. Reports are submitted to AlienAlerts.com.
KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS
- ↑ ↓ — Scroll active display panel / vessel strip
- ← → — Pan chart
- + - — Zoom chart in / out
- ESC — Close active display panel
