Alternate Name: "Zeta Reticuli Incident" because two ufologists connected the star map allegedly shown to Betty Hill with the Zeta Reticuli system.
What Happened: Betty and Barney Hill, an interracial couple (civil rights activists) returning home to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, from a vacation in Montreal, Canada, were driving south on U.S. Route 3 through the White Mountains. Betty noticed a bright, erratically moving light in the sky that appeared to follow their car. They stopped multiple times to observe it with binoculars. Near Indian Head, the object—described as a large, disc-shaped craft with a row of windows and flashing multicolored lights—descended and hovered above their vehicle.
Barney reportedly saw humanoid figures looking out the windows. The couple experienced intense fear, a buzzing sound, and two hours of missing time. They arrived home with unexplained physical evidence (shoes damaged, watches stopped, car marks) and later recalled under hypnosis (by Dr. Benjamin Simon) being taken aboard the craft, subjected to medical examinations by grayish humanoid beings, and shown a star map by Betty. Their dachshund Delsey was also aboard.
