The fifth tranche of UAP files released under the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (PURSUE) on August 7 contains a notable pattern that has received less attention than individual cases: the U.S. government is documenting orbs and triangular craft as separate classes of phenomena with markedly different characteristics.

The distinction is visible across both the contemporary sensor cases and the FBI interview reports included in the 41-file release.

Orbs: Small, Cold, Coordinated, and Reactive

The standout orb case in Release 5 is the September 8, 2021 encounter involving a U.S. Special Operations AC-130J gunship over the Gulf of Oman.

According to the accompanying intelligence report and six video clips (cellphone recordings of the aircraft’s infrared sensors):

• The crew was conducting a nighttime live-fire exercise and dropped a flare into the water as a mock target.
• Two “cold orbs” approximately four feet across appeared and hovered near the flare for about 15 seconds.
• When the weapons officer prepared to fire the 105 mm cannon, the orbs accelerated out of view before the round was fired.
• The crew ultimately observed roughly 25 instances of these objects during the mission. They moved in pairs and small groups, performed coordinated maneuvers, and reached estimated speeds between 250 and 1,300 mph.

The official description states the objects “appeared to react to the aircraft firing its main cannon.” The case remains unresolved.

These objects are consistently described as small, low-thermal-signature spheres capable of rapid, coordinated movement and apparent responsiveness to human actions.

Triangles: Large, Structured, and Low-Altitude

By contrast, the FBI material in the same release centers on large triangular craft:

• A 2002 report from Bagram, Afghanistan, describes a silent equilateral triangle estimated at 500 feet in size, confirmed by two pilots.
• Multiple 2023 cases near Colorado Springs involve low-altitude (as low as 300 feet) dark or translucent triangles, sometimes accompanied by optical distortion or haze, silvery-blue rear bands, or red corner lights. Several accounts note sudden 90-degree maneuvers or rapid acceleration.
• A 2011 report describes a roughly 200-foot black triangle with bright white corner lights and a low pulsing hum.
• A 2026 multi-hour event in the western United States involved repeated red lights that developed into coordinated low-altitude objects and three-light formations. An FBI agent later recorded thermally hot objects in the same area with handheld thermal imaging.

These reports describe large, structured craft operating at low altitude, often silently or near-silently, with lighting configurations and optical effects distinct from the small cold orbs.

Why the Distinction Matters

Release 5 does not present orbs and triangles as interchangeable or as the same phenomenon viewed under different conditions. The files group them separately by size, thermal properties, flight behavior, and operational profile.

• Orbs appear small, cold on infrared, highly maneuverable in groups, and in at least one well-documented case, reactive to imminent hostile action.
• Triangles appear large, structured, frequently low and slow or moderately paced, and are associated with optical distortion and corner lighting in multiple independent accounts spanning more than two decades.

This categorical separation is consistent with patterns noted in earlier PURSUE releases and with long-term observational data collected by independent platforms.

Looking Ahead

Observers tracking the releases closely note that Release 5 continues to surface both categories but places heavier emphasis on structured triangular craft in the FBI reporting block. Some analysts expect future tranches may continue this trend—bringing forward additional military and intelligence documentation of larger craft while orb cases, though still present, become proportionally less prominent.

Whether that shift materializes will become clearer with Release 6. For now, the public record in Tranche 5 supports a straightforward conclusion: the U.S. government is treating small responsive orbs and large triangular craft as distinct classes of unidentified anomalous phenomena.
