Eastern Pittsburgh--Bright orange orb, slow-moving. Blasts east, shortly followed by fighter jets.

Grandpa kept telling us about this time where he was outside (with his kids, who were too young to remember) in eastern Pittsburgh. It was in the 1960s.
In the sky, a large orange sphere floated into view slightly south in the sky. It loitered for a minute or so, and then rocketed off into the eastern sky. No noise, consistent acceleration.
Within 5 minutes fighter jets flew past following the path of the orb.
He promptly called the Air Force, and got on his HAM radio.
Do not recall what the explanation was.
I've seen a couple similar reports here. No mention of the fighters, though.
