High speed lead craft leaves three others in its wake
It was my first Spring Quarter at the not-yet-named, “The Ohio State University.” It was late afternoon, probably the middle of May, 1967, when I left my room, # 332, to call my best friend, in an adjacent dowm. It was the inaugural year of Nosker House, my dorm in the newly opened north complex of residence halls. He lived on the first floor of Drackett Tower, to my north, and on the west side of his building. Although we had phones in our dorm rooms, they were only able to access in-house phones. To call outside the dorm we had to use the phones located in the stairwell, mine was on the west side of the building.
So here is my report.
As I was waiting for my buddy to answer his phone - located in his room and able to access in-house and out-of-house calls – I looked up and saw four jets flying in a diamond formation. I was intrigued by these jets as they flew east to west and were at an attitude of about ten-thirty as seen out my stairwell window. I don’t know their altitude, but they were way up there!!! No wings could be defined, but I had often seen jets (probably military since commercial aircraft don’t fly in formation) flying at this altitude. As soon the phone was answered, I immediately asked, “Hey look out your window, can you see those four jets up there?" I planned to give him more information as to their being a bit to the north, and quite high.
In the time that it took me to utter those few words, the lead craft hit the accelerator and completely flew to the end of my visible horizon and out of my scope of visibility. We are talking hundreds (?) thousands (?) of miles based on the altitude. The three remaining jets continued at a snail’s pace, although I am sure they were travelling at a high rate of speed - for them. There was no contrail, no noise heard - no deviation of direction, just an incredible display of speed like I had never seen before, or since - and that was 48 years ago.
