Object was 1st noticed low in the SE sky, just over the treeline. It looked to be about on the coastline between Southwest Harbor and the seawall, several miles from where we were.
We 1st thought it was a jet approaching from over the ocean. After several minutes it hadnt changed location appreciably and we paid closer attention to it.
It was far enough away not to be able to count, but it had several very bright, iridescent lights: cobalt blue, red and white. Looking thru binoculars, it was an oblong angular shape, most like a chevron.
It definitely moved a bit in the sky, making us think it might be a weather balloon, but it didnt have any apparent mass, and it had moved up in the sky line, but also side to side.
The object was visible for at least 1.5 hrs. It was gone when we checked again before going to bed around midnight
We were a group of rational, smart (including an engineer, a future engineer, ex-air force officer) with no good explanation for what we were seeing. It was definitely not a celestial object.
