2014-11-28 - Cape Carteret, NC - Fireball

Floating red orbs in the sky off Emerald Isle, NC

November 28, 2014, between 11:30 and 11:59pm. My 14 year old son and I noticed from a distance a floating red light in the sky and thought nothing of it. As we got to the beach and started walking, I noticed another glowing red light – too close to be an airplane.

It looked like someone had “set it free” from the beach not too far from us and it hovered toward us. I thought it was a drone or remote controlled aircraft, BUT there was no sound at all. They moved slowly and seemed to be “floating” in the sky. One came closer to us and then sailed out over the ocean and finally disappeared as it got too far away to see.

Another one followed it but never came close to us. Then another. There were 5-6 of these with 3 visible at once. There was no wind and very little sound other than the crashing waves. We continued walking toward where we thought they were being “released” but then they were gone. 8-10 minutes from the first sighting and they were gone.
