re: Anomaly in Sky over Bartonsville, PA - Afternoon of March 6th, 2014.

Natural Light Phenomenon or UFO? Okay . . . Here’s how it went. On the afternoon of Thursday, March 6, 2014, at 3:45 p.m., here in Bartonsville, Pennsylvania, I was on the rear enclosed sun porch making some close-up JPG pictures of old silver dollar coins. It’s good and bright out there in the afternoon so natural light is all that’s needed. The now antiquated Nikon D1H digital SLR somehow seems to make sharper close on pictures than the later model D2HS camera with much improved light sensor computer system.

While working there making close-up photos with the D1H, I happened to glance out the window to the southwest and noticed in the mostly blue skies, numerous plane contrails. It was first pondered as to what might be going on to get so much weekday afternoon apparent military jet activity. Looking up again towards our now broken whirlee-gig windmill that's atop the rear deck upper railing, a blotch of rainbow colored light was seen shining from behind an odd wispy rippled cloud. That was about 3:48 p.m. with the afternoon sun getting lower over in the west. It seemed then as if the sun was maybe shinning into the cloud at a precise angle and reflecting ice crystals making the rainbow colors. I took the old D1 camera and strolled out onto an ice free area of the back deck to make a couple of pictures.

About the same time, the light from within the cloud became very bright as if something shiny was up there reflecting the sunlight. Noticed then was a trail of what appeared to be exhaust smoke or maybe vapor in the form of small puffy clouds. It was then realized that what was being seen was NOT a rainbow but something else. After clicking a couple of more pictures it was noticed that the battery on the D1 camera was getting low.

I returned inside the house and grabbed the Nikon D2HS camera with fully charged battery and big memory card with 2.1K remaining picture slots. By the time I got back outside the bright light in the sky had faded along with most of that unusual wispy mackerel skin cloud having disappeared. It was realized then that the mask like cloud was somehow related to the hovering anomaly. By that time there were more puffy little clouds in a row leading to a stationary light rust colored blob at the same spot in the sky. I took some more pictures of the unusual cloud effects and returned inside.

Once back in, I happened to glance outside to see the reddish blob again transforming into a brilliant light being more defined with a sort of shape with what looked to be a pair of blazing headlights. The skies all around were also again filled with crisp fresh jet contrails. Noticed too was that the light from the object was shining or reflecting as beams into surrounding clouds. The wispy rippled cloud around the object seemed to also expand and get rapidly bigger. A series of pictures was made within probably seven or eight minutes. Though I was tempted to put the camera on the 8-frames per second motor drive, it was decided to make more carefully composed individual pictures. Wanted the foreground images to help show perspective and location. In total, there are probably 20 or 25 pictures made with two professional grade, though older model, digital cameras. Of those, some look to be washed out before a lens hood was installed. The images on the original memory cards ha! ve not been modified so that the sequence of photos can be verified if needed.
