I was on a flight from NY to Orlando, FL, and while looking out the window, noticed a bright red light to the South West. The captain mentioned that we were passing Jacksonville just before, so I assume it was in the area, though I could tell it was not close to the aircraft. It also appeared to be above the horizon (aka in the air) judging by the surrounding ground lights and sky though it was difficult to see it’s relative location exactly.

The object did not blink and was a solid red color initially. After approximately 2 minutes, it seemed to subtly pulsate with red/orange coloration (no blinking). The light then disappeared completely for about 30-45 seconds and reappeared for another minute more in a similar location. It then disappeared again for about 15s and reappeared for another 30s (approx.) before disappearing completely. The object seemed to fade in and out instead of 100% on/100% off.

It seemed to stay in the same relative location, though it could have easily been traveling towards the plane. It was a very bright object and had a distinct color, which is why I took particular notice. I fly pretty frequently and I can't say I've seen anything quite like it before.
