Bright white light hovering above trees accompanied by loud noise, disappears suddenly.
Driving home along a fairly straight road last night, I saw a bright, brilliantly white light approx. 20' above the tree line about 200 yards to my 1:00. There was also a loud, grating noise, which I initially thought was coming from my car, but upon rolling down my window, I determined it was coming from somewhere further away. From what I could see, there was no discernable shape to the light.
I live about a mile from the ocean in a heavily wooded suburban area with mostly summer residences (so about 90% of the homes in the area are empty in the winter), and there are no parking lots or shopping centers around that would emit any kind of light.
As I continued driving, I kept an eye on the unusual light, noticing that the noise got louder as I got closer to it. About 1/2 mile after I first spotted the light, the road takes a sharp bend to the left. Making this turn, I'd have thought, would have positioned the light behind my right shoulder, but I lost sight of it. The noise, however, was still quite loud.
The road I live on, which is a narrow, dark, dirt road, is now about 100 yards away on the right. As I made the turn onto my street, I was astounded to find the light was now at my 11:00, about 100 yards away, still approx. 20' above the trees. My road is riddled with potholes, so one must drive quite slowly, and my house is about 150 yards down the road. As I got closer to my driveway, which is on the right, I watched the light begin to creep forward, getting closer to the end of my driveway. The noise, also, was getting louder. I, irrationally, turned off my headlights, because I began to get scared, and pulled hurriedly into my driveway; the light was now only about 25 yards from the end of my driveway. I parked my car and gathered up my belongings as quickly as I could and ran to the end of my deck, which overlooks the driveway and front yard. However, in the time it took for me to turn around and register the fact that the light had now reached the end of my driv! eway, the noise disappeared and the light, which had been extremely slow moving, suddenly jettisoned off to my left, leaving only a long streak of residual light. I remained outside for about 30 more minutes, but I didn't see or hear anything further.
