2012-10-25 - Cape San Blas, FL - Fireball

Three orange glowing globes floating over the Gulf at Cape San Blas, FL.

On October 25, 2012, around 19:45 I was sitting on the beach in Cape San Blas, FL a mile or less from the state park. I saw three or four orange globes fade in out of nowhere in the sky over the Gulf of Mexico while my husband was making a fire. Each time I saw one I told my husband, but by the time it registered with him to look the globes had faded back into nothingness. This phenomenon was not airplanes, lanterns, fireworks, flares or shooting stars. We saw airplanes that evening and I would say the size of the globes appeared several times larger than any airplane lights we saw. These lights faded in and out without sound in just a few seconds. At about 21:30 we both saw a white light appear just as the orange ones had. It came out of nowhere and looked like it was coming right at us getting larger and larger then fading back out. It made no sound. We tried to explain this to ourselves as a shooting star coming directly at our line of sight, but! does not seem likely. We could not tell the distance from the beach. None of these were boat lights as they were too high over the water to be such. The night was clear and the moon although not full lit up the beach very well.
