Metallic V-shaped object spotted over N Hollywood area CA-170.
My family and I were traveling NW at 70 MPH on CA-170 (Hollywood Fwy.) between Magnolia and Oxnard.
I spotted a metallic/reflective object to the NW near Valley Glen area. We observed the object for several minutes as we approached closer then passed it. Object had a V or Chevron shape approx. 40 degree angle.
The object hovered at about 1000-1500 feet – similar to traffic helicopter altitude. A plane landing or taking off from a regional airport was passing at the same time a couple thousand feet above the object.
The behavior was the oddest thing, it seemed as if it was tumbling in place while it hovered, which is how we could tell what shape it was from our approaching angle.
We exited the freeway to see if we could get a better look, but could only see it between gaps in buildings. 5 min later we got back on the freeway it had moved north approximately 1-3 miles and was now NW of us again. We observed for another 1-2 min as we passed it yet again.
Our first impression is that it could be a large balloon, as it seemed like it was tethered, but that didn’t make sense since we had moved locations on the freeway and there was no visible tether as we got closer.
I had the impression that it looked like the letter V and thought it looked a lot like a House Industries Neutraface Bold “V”. It was 3D and had solid mass to it. The sun really flared off of the sharp angles and surfaces, almost like a mirror; which is why it caught my attention in the first place. Based on its altitude it must have been the size of our minivan, maybe bigger.
I always look up at movement in the sky ever since I was a kid. I have watched many types of aircraft fly over day and night. After looking at thousands of aircraft in my lifetime, this does not fit any of the shapes and/or flight behaviors of anything I have seen.
Interestingly enough another report on NUFORC caught my attention, same description, 60 miles away, 5 hours earlier but spotted at a higher altitude. <a
