Lights merge then move across the sky

This was the summer between my 8th and 9th grade year. My mom took me and a group of my friends out to a lake and we spent the evening walking in the hills and then started fishing as the sun was setting. We were all just having a relaxing evening and there was only one other group at the lake, another family of maybe 5, it was just us out in an isolated area. All of a sudden, just as the sun lowered below the tree line (so the sky still had an orange/purpleish tinge to it) we heard this strange noise like a mechanical sound but what made it so strange (aside from being out in the middle of nowhere) was that it didn’t just come from one spot. The sound seemed to be coming from all around us, it surrounded us basically. The two guys in our group went over the tiny hill separating us from the other family to ask if maybe the noise was coming from them? They came back and said the family had thought the noise was from us. We were trying to figure out what it wa! s when suddenly, a huge light kind of rose from behind the trees and just slowly kept rising in the sky until it stopped. When it stopped, it looked like a door was opening (if you focused enough, you could see a couple of orange lights around the area that “opened”) and the light got brighter but you could see like 3 more balls of lights leaving from the “door” and then one of those 3 lights got big and released 3 more lights and this all happened in a sort of diagonal pattern. Then the lights each grouped up near the center of the sky (very slowly and deliberately) and hovered there for a couple of seconds, it could’ve been longer, and then out of nowhere, they seemed to merge and then split into four groups and each went in each direction so one group went across the sky to the north and so on. But it happened so quickly, everything else happened rather slowly but when they went across the sky, it was in the blink of an eye. I don’t know how far away from earth they were! but if I were looking at stars, they would be millions of lig! htyears away from each other. After that, they just hovered in their spots. My mom finally got us all herded into the truck and immediately drove us home but as far as I could see, the lights never moved from their spots. I forgot to mention, with the mechanical noise, it also felt like there was a slight vibration or something, like you could feel it in your bones but it was very subtle. I’m only reporting this now because A. I didn’t realize this site existed until now and B. It’s been a few years and I’ve still never forgotten it and I just want to know if anybody may have seen and felt something similar.
