2012-06-02 - Beacon Rock State Park, WA - Sphere

Observed about 20 bright orange glowing lights at relatively fast rate of speed over Columbia River Gorge WA.

UFO Sighting On June 2, 2012 I was camping with two friends at Beacon Rock State Park in Washington. It is located on the Columbia River Gorge 35 miles east of Portland, Oregon. At approximately 9pm we were walking west on the camp road to catch the trail to the restroom. I noticed some unusual orange glowing lights overhead and to our right which I pointed out to my friends. The lights were tracking way above and slightly to the right of a power line cut through forested land. There was no sound. The initial lights I saw were clustered in a small group. I didn’t count them but there were about 5 with a couple other ones trailing behind. They were not symmetrically spaced. I observed about 18-20 of these orange glowing lights in a period of about 20 minutes. After the initial cluster of lights, the ones that followed were singular and more spaced out.

As my friends and I marveled at the lights, I recalled that my binoculars were in the car and ran back to get them. I also called another woman over from another campsite to observe the lights. Through my binoculars I could see that the lights were perfectly round. They were not solid colored orange but appeared to have grey shadows without a distinctive pattern. They resembled brain matter. In the lower left quadrant of two of them, there appeared to be electrical activity like spidery lightening. While the perimeters were perfectly round, some appeared to have noticeable grey colored fissures that ran out to the perimeter. The only exceptions to the perfectly spherical lights were two that appeared to morph somewhat into elliptical shapes. I don’t know if this could have been a distortion of my binoculars or not.

The lights came from west to east and were moving at a relatively fast rate. They were much larger than a planet but smaller appearing than the moon. They appeared to be at the altitude that a small plane would fly and the later ones followed one another along the same path. A short distance after passing where I were standing, they ascended upward and disappeared. There was cloud cover as they ascended so I couldn’t discern if they were hidden by the clouds, ascended out of sight or evaporated.

Upon returning home I checked with NOAA in Portland and found that the wind was coming from the west that night at about 10 mph at the surface. Aloft to 3000’ the wind was blowing west to southwest at 15-20 mph.

I have never seen anything like this in my life and am splitting with curiosity to know what they were.
