2011-10-01 - Captiva Island, FL - Fireball

On Saturday night, October 1, 2011 we observed a level fly by of what looked like an aircraft on fire. It seemed low in the sky, under 30,000 feet, and was heading away from us. It paralled the coast going south from Captiva Island towards Fort Myers, Florida.

We could see very clearly orange and red flames at the rear.

After about 45 seconds and maybe 25 miles it seemed to flicker out. What was odd is that it didn't descend, it seemed to stay level.

I thought it was an aircraft with an engine on fire but I can't find any record of the event today.
