Dark object emits a dark beam at a high altitude

I was flying with my family from San Francisco to Philadelphia. One or two hours in the flight when it was still quite light outside (I can’t remember exactly but I think it was around sunset time however it was hard to say since we were travelling through time zones). We were flying over the USA and I’m not sure exactly what state we were over at the time, but my brother and I were casually looking out the window on the left hand side of the plane when we were at quite a high altitude and spotted a foreign object quite a bit away in the distance, towards the right hand side.

I cannot remember the shape exactly but it was a dark colour, possibly black. I had originally assumed it was another plane however, it had quite a jerky motion. It puzzled me a bit, but then I saw something very astonishing: It had a beam. It was a dark coloured shadow type of beam and it was changing direction quite rapidly. The angle of the beam kept alternating, moving towards the left at an almost 180 degree angle and then straight away moving to the right hand side at an almost 180 degree angle. It kept this up for about 20 seconds, and then the object zoomed across the sky till it was opposite the centre of my window, and then continued to move in a direction away from us.

This was witnessed by my mother, my brother and quite possibly a few others.
