3/12/11 @ 6:45pm; Over Rte. 495 around Stow, MA - hovering object with a large, flashing white light, smaller red/green lights
We were driving southbound on Rte. 495 from Groton to Marlboro at about 6:45 p.m., on our way to a soccer game. Myself, my fiancee and my 11 year old daughter were all witnesses. We first saw a very bright light in the sky, then as we got closer we realized it was a helicopter. Odd to see it with what looked like search lights on. A few moments later, we saw a bright, flashing white light in the sky farther ahead of us. As we got closer, we also could see red and green lights. The white light was HUGE and flashing intermittently, the green and red ones seemed to remain on..but it seemed as if the object was spinning in the sky. We continued to get closer, and could not figure out what it was. It wasn't really moving - sort of hovering. We came upon it, looked directly up at it from my sun roof - and it was nothing we have ever seen before. Definitely not an airplane or a helicopter, and it seemed to not be moving at all, since we approached it and t! hen it was behind us as we continued to drive. It was fairly dark out, so it was impossible to detect any shape, color, or size, as we could only see the lights. They were very bright, and their pattern seemed to indicate the object was squarish or diamond shaped. When we were directly under the object, I slowed down on the highway so we could take a good look at it, to about 40mph. It seemed to be about 500-1000 feet above us, but it didn't look very big, so it may have been flying higher than that. The object did not seem to move - it didn't disappear, we simply drove past it and could still see it in the same position behind us. We have NO idea what this could have been, and frankly, feel silly reporting it, but would like to know what it may have been, or if others reported it. Traffic was light but there were many other cars, many breaking as we were, as if they also saw it.
