2011-02-17 - Franconia, AZ - Formation

Bright, twinkling, amber light cluster seen in northern Arizona two different nights.

On 2/17/11, at approximately 1820 hours (MT), a coworker and I were traveling eastbound on I-40 near Franconia, AZ. It was dark and there was a bright full (or nearly full) moon high in the sky. Our attention was drawn to a bright cluster of amber lights at about 20 degrees elevation southeast of our location towards Lake Havasu City, AZ. A 2" wide Subaru logo (the one with the stars on it, minus the 'ring') held at arms length, with each 'star' randomly turning on and off, would be a very good representation of what we saw. The lights would come on for no more than a second or two then go off, with no apparent order, duration, or pattern, until the last moment, when they seemed to cycle sequentially from right to left. This lasted for no more than 10 to 15 seconds, then we could see nothing.

After a period of about 3 or 4 minutes, the light cluster came on again in the same [southeast] location, randomly cycled for about 10 seconds, then was gone. The lights ! were bright enough that they were not easily defined (similar to a welding arc). I could not tell if the lights were part of one object or separate. The cluster appeared stationary in relation to a mountain range in the background which was at least 8 to 10 miles away.

I would not normally report something like this, but on 2/15/11 (two days prior) while traveling westbound on I-40 near Seligman, AZ, a different coworker and I observed the same light formation at approximately 2300 hours MT. This was the same exact amber cluster, but very low in the sky (probably 5 degrees on the horizon), and seemingly farther away to the west towards Kingman, AZ. It was only seen one time for approximately 10 seconds total.

My initial assumption was a military exercises of some sort, but after the second closer observation, I'm not as sure now.
