Orange, flickering light in the sky moving silently and changing direction 90 degrees once before dimming out.
When the object was first spotted it was an orange disk or orb shaped light apparently over the ocean moving northwest directly toward the beach. The object presented at about ¼ the diameter of a full moon, but almost as bright. The color of the light was amber to orange. The light constantly flickered at a random and varying frequency. There were lighter and darker parts to the light. It was similar to observing a camp fire in the sky in its makeup and color.
Originally spotted, it was about 20 degrees above the horizon. After about 2 minutes, it had moved to about 45 degrees above the horizon, and appeared to be moving at a constant altitude. At this point the object slowly turned toward the northeast, parallel to the beach. At this time the light started getting dimmer. The light continued on this path, getting dimmer all the time, until after a total of about 4 minutes of observation the light dimmed to the point that it was no longer observable. During the time the object was traveling NE it traversed an arc of about 45 degrees of the field of view.
No accurate estimate of altitude was possible, and therefore actual speed estimations are difficult. Feelings were, however, that the object could have been at five to ten thousand feet, which would translate to a relatively slow speed.
There was no detectable sound from the object.
Atmospheric conditions at the time were: cloudless sky; zero wind; approx. 70 deg. F.
The time of day was approximately 21:00 edst, Saturday, October 9, 2010 at Ocean Isle Beach, NC. There were two observers.
