2010-06-12 - McNabb, IL - Light

I saw a ball of light that hovered and shot out of sight when I turned toward it

As I was returning home from work around dusk, I slowed down to turn into my driveway on the left. We had a small pond in the yard (much larger than a koi pond, it had a paddle boat and took up an acre or so of land). Above the pond I saw a bright, round light hovering in place. I believe it was red in color, but my memory of the color it was is fuzzy. I do remember that it wasn’t just standard, white light. At first, I thought it was a satellite or other normal light in the sky, high above but low on the horizon from my point of view. It seemed to be just above the tree line off in the distance, at first.

As I turned into the driveway (my headlights were on but it wasn’t completely dark yet), I kept my eyes fixed on the light because I couldn’t quite ascertain what I was seeing, and it seemed out of place. I was actually trying to fumble in my purse (without breaking visual contact with the light) for my phone to try to take a picture - because of the feeling I had that it was something strange or out of place.

I rounded the corner into the drive pretty slowly, because I was looking over at the ball of light and trying to drive one-handed all at the same time. Just as my headlamps began to turn into the yard and illuminate the area between me and the pond, the light seemed to react to my showing up. It zoomed north, becoming obscured behind my house, and then completely out of view.

When it changed location, it was incredibly fast - a split second. It was obscured by my house as it flew away, and it also flew in front of the trees that laid beyond my house on its course north. This movement allowed me to see the correct perspective - it was not actually far off on the horizon, but was much closer, initially hovering just a few feet off of the water of the pond, then zooming along maybe 10 feet above the ground until I could no longer see it.

The brightness or color of the light did not change at any point, from what I recall. There was no noise that I could hear. It looked like it could be about the size of a volleyball or slightly smaller, but because it was illuminated it was hard to judge.

I drove as fast as I could down the long driveway to try to see it past my house, but there was nothing I could see north of my house.

It was not a drone, a bird, a bug, or any other kind of craft or living thing that I am familiar with. I wasn’t drinking and I was on no mind altering substances. I have no medical history of hallucinations or schizophrenia.

The rate of speed which it was able to travel from a dead stop was something I have never seen in real life. It was strange enough to leave me emotionally shaken for a day or two afterward, and I have never forgotten the incident.

This is a somewhat related footnote: when I told this story to my boyfriend, he related to me that he has a good friend who is a mutual acquaintance. She had told him several years ago that when she was in high school in the late 1980’s, she was riding around with two friends in a car, pointlessly driving around in circles on country roads like kids do around here to waste time and be away from their parents. They were doing this in rural Putnam and Marshall counties - and the reason I’m mentioning it is because that is the same general area where I saw the fast moving light.

I don’t know all of the details of this story other than these three young girls saw three colored balls of light that seemed to be following in unison beside their car, above the ditch, and between them and the cornfields. It kept the same pace as they did. When they got scared and sped up, the lights sped up, as well. As their fear escalated, the balls of light seemed to be “chasing” them. They were so scared they were screaming and crying, and the lights followed them for quite a while on their drive back home - home being 15 or 20 miles north of where they were.

The lights kept pace with them for quite a while as they traveled at high speeds down country roads toward home. The encounter left them all incredibly shaken up.

Last story: there is a cemetery in that same rural area of Marshall/Putnam counties that has various reports of “balls of light” or “orbs” over the years that have appeared in paranormal books and ghost mapping sights.
