Orange/red circular craft at low level cuts across my direction of travel
This sighting occurred in January 2010 in the West Midlands region of England at approximately 5.30 pm. I was driving out of a town called Stourport and entering countryside with very little street lighting. Out of the right hand corner of my field of vision I noticed a circular illuminated object, consisting of a whitish-orange center with a deeper orange-red outer ring traveling right to left in front of my direction of travel. I would guess the object diameter to be approximately 20 feet and my distance to the object about 100 yards. The object was describing an arc, no more than about 60 feet off the ground and traveling at fast-jet speed, say 200 to 300 mph. When almost directly over the road on which I was traveling it did a total 90 degree turn in an instant, or on a sixpence as we say over here, so that it was now progressing in the same direction as myself. It disappeared over the trees and I was hoping to catch sight of it around the next bend but ! it was gone.
This whole episode was over in seconds and my first reaction was "Wow, I've never seen aircraft navigation lights like that before!" Then the realisation of what I had seen started to sink in. A fast jet could not have made that maneuver, and it was too fast to be a helicopter. Also, whilst still thinking about it a few days later I realised that the object light had a strange quality about it, similar I would say to a speckle pattern effect that you get when shining a laser onto a surface.
I'm a qualified accountant,(CPA equivalent), and I've been an aviation enthusiast all my life. My aircraft recognition skills are very good but needless to say I've never seen anything like this before.
