Lengthy witnessing of an unkn light making incredible maneuvers in the northern Nevada Sky near Vya.
My wife and I had been collecting obsidian north of Alturas, CA. Towards the end of the day we were going to hunt Quail and then head through the back country to visit a friend in Reno which was a good distance south before heading back to the Bay Area (CA). We decided to take a back route through a network of well maintained roads crossing from California into Nevada using HWY 299 that turns into a smooth dirt road at the Nevada border then on to forest road 8A to the 447 in Nevada. My wife was tired and wanted to rest so I got out of the car to stretch my legs and hiked up a small hill 4-5 miles into Nevada. One of my favorite things to do at night is hike. I am an experienced woodsman and was just wanting to sit still on the ridge and listen to groups of coyotes howl back and forth a bit.
I could see the car from my viewpoint. We were parked right near a roadway sign (I think it was a "turns ahead" style yellow triangular sign on the left side of the r! oad facing west). After listening to the howls on this relatively still night for at least 15 minutes, I noticed a light in the sky to the east through the pass. It was hard to gauge distance since there were no trees in the foreground for perspective. I could go to the exact spot and point to where it was though. The light was distant. That's all I can say about perspective.
It started off as a still light. I noticed it as I was scanning for my favorite constellations (It was much brighter than Polaris) and then I saw it move, I thought it might be a plane but there were no flashing indicators and it did not move like a plane or jet. After a few seconds it shot up at incredible speed. I am ex military. My jaw dropped. I knew that it was no conventional aircraft that I am aware of. It descended in a staircase type fashion at times, then would shoot upwards and make multiple maneuvers such as a rectangle (at speeds that would render a pilot unconscious due to g-fo! rce effects). It seemed like it was testing it's ability/mane! uverability. There was no particular pattern to it. The light changed colors from blue through the spectrum pulsing. I watched it for what seemed like forever. Then I went down to the car to see if it was visible from that angle and it was. I woke up my wife and she watched it as well. It made no sound at all. I estimate it's distance at least 2 miles away nearest "town" is a ghost town called "Vya" In the very northwestern corner of Nevada. Approximate location of object is as follows: Long./Lat.41˚36'11.37 N - 119˚55'20.7".
