Low-flying craft with vapor trail spotted at nightfall.

I was standing outside my house drinking beers around nightfall, when a smokey trail in the sky caught my eye. I looked more closely and saw what looked roughly like a mechanical bird, with wings and a body, and flashing lights on the wings.
I couldn't tell the color exactly, but I reckon it was white or gray. It was pretty low in the sky so I reckoned it would be landing soon. I went inside and locked the door, but when I looked out the window again 15 minutes later, I couldn't see it.
