Hovering close to my house.
I believe it was in the summer of ’94, during the night, I was awakened by a sound outside my open bedroom window. My wife slept through it. I may have been sleeping lightly because my two daughters were in sleeping bags on the deck next to our bedroom. The sound was early in the morning, maybe three thirty or so. I didn’t get up, but rather fell back to sleep. If I was to describe the sound I would have to say it was like that of a sound effect from a sci-fi movie. It was a combination of humming low with whooshing and whirring . It was close to the house in the back yard just beyond the deck. The oscillation accelerated as it rose and faded out of earshot at an angular direction. It’s funny how much information can be gleamed from just a sound.
As I began to wake up at my more normal time, fivethirty to six, I was absently distracted by a steady irregular tinging sound in my lower back yard. I was getting my lunch ready for work, shower and the usual routine with this sense of this background noise just not being part of it, not being part of the usual. I always run late to work but I had to walk down to the lower yard on my way out to see what was making the noise. My lower yard consisted of a stand of older growth fir trees and I had the habit of collecting junk and storing it down below. One such item was the drum off of a cement mixer truck. Anyway the ground was covered with pine cones from the trees; they had been falling off by the hundreds out of the tree stand apparently for several hours. The ting sound was the ones hitting the cement drum. I first considered squirrels but there were so many cones.
I was called out to by my neighbor from across a fence from which she had no view wanting to know what I was doing. She was obviously hearing the cones as well. It wasn’t until later that day I connected the early morning sound with the strange de-coning of my trees. I believe this was a close encounter.
For reference my house is on the west side of Vashon Island in the Puget Sound in Washington State.
