object in night sky at low altitude 3 intensely bright white lights- two on one end one on the other end connected by a red light
August 1982- driving south on route 123 at night. Saw a very bright light above the horizon at some distance. Continued to view light until the horizon was obscured by trees. As I came out of the trees and onto a plateau of farm fields on a long straight away section of road, I could now see there were 3 intensely bright lights, no colored lights to indicate it was an aircraft. At this time it appeared the lights were not moving and appeared to be hovering over a field to my right at low altitude. I turned left onto Nixon Camp road which ran towards the object. I stopped my vehicle on the road next to the field over which the object was hovering which was to my right, I looked out the drivers side window but could not get a clear view, and because my car was running I could be sure it was not making a sound, however being stopped I could tell it was not moving. I turned off my car and heard nothing at all. I stepped out of my car and stood on the road, looking up I could positively tell that the object was neither moving or making any noise. I could clearly see 3 very bright white lights (like nothing I had ever seen) two at one end and another at what I guessed was the other end. The object appeared to be approximately 100 yards overhead at my 2:00, and the distance between the two sets of lights approximately 40-50 yards. I observed the object in this state for 2 minutes. Not being sure of what to do I began to flash the headlights of my vehicle in an SOS morse code fashion repeatedly. during this time the object remained in the same state for approximately one additional minute. Then there appeared between the two sets of white lights a rectangular pattern of red light which undulated from front to back, each undulation lasted approximately two seconds each in the same direction. I observed the object in this state for approximately 30 seconds. I then began to hear a sound like air rushing and the object began to move slowly up and to the northeast. I continued to watch until object was no longer visible. My assumption was that object was elongated, however the bright lights prevented me from being able to see the profile. I did not report the sighting to local authorities, however I assumed it was an unidentified object as it was unlike any aircraft I was familiar with.
