Lights seen by sailors on watch at night above a US Navy ship in the Atlantic in 1970, stationary & extreme speed with 90 degree turns
I was in the US Navy on the USS Simon Lake, crossing the Atlantic Ocean from Scotland and heading for United States.
I was on watch sometime in the night on the outside of the ship in one of the watch stations positioned around the ship. This was a long time ago, but my recollection is that I was at the front left (port) side near or on a gun placement station. There were other guys at the other corners of the ship and at least one on the top of the Bridge structure, so at least 5 of us. One of us saw lights moving above us very high up and told the rest of us over the headsets we all wore while on watch to communicate with each other and the command on the Bridge.
It was pitch black out with a clear sky and we all looked up and saw these dots of light which seemed very high above us - hard to determine the distance but at least above 5000 ft I'd guess. We watched as these dots of light - about 3 or 4 to the best of my recollection - were stationary, then would independently move in a flash to another spot in the sky not far from where they had been, centered right above our position. Then they would move again, and turn in a 90 angle. Not long after we saw this, a few minutes at most, they zoomed off from a dead stop to extreme speed and went out of sight. We were of course flabbergasted that something above us in the middle of nowhere in the night was lit up with star brightness, yet seemingly just a plain round shape, move so quickly at such extreme angles and speed. In these times it felt silly to think we'd seen a ufo, but we agreed we must have - we couldn't deny or pretend we hadn't given there were at least five of us that! all saw this together. We of course reported it but never heard anything further about it. That was it.
